Protecting Biodiversity: Our Responsibility and Hope for a Healthy Planet

Kathmandu Valley, Nepal

From Nepal's tall mountains to its green plains, our country is full of amazing nature and many different kinds of life. As someone who works on planting trees in cities like Kathmandu and Lalitpur, I see how important nature's balance is. It's clear we need to protect it now. At Lily Leaves Social Enterprises, we believe protecting nature isn't just a good idea; it's what we must do. It's our best hope for a healthy Earth, especially in our growing cities.

What is Nature's Variety (Biodiversity) and Why Does It Matter in Nepal?

Biodiversity just means all the different kinds of life on Earth. This includes everything from tiny bugs to big animals, and all the natural places they live in. Nepal is special because it has so many different kinds of plants and animals. We have many types of forests and mountains, and thousands of plants and animals that live only here.

But why is this important for you, living in Kathmandu or Lalitpur, or anywhere else?

  • Nature's Gifts: Nature gives us important things we need every day. It gives us clean air to breathe, fresh water to drink, good soil to grow food, and helps control our weather. It also helps plants grow fruit and vegetables, and keeps harmful bugs away. If we lose different kinds of life, we lose these important gifts from nature. This can hurt our health, our jobs, and our whole way of life.

  • Stronger Nature: Places with many different kinds of plants and animals are stronger. They can handle changes better, like new sicknesses or changes in weather. For example, a healthy forest with many different trees can deal with a new bug better than a forest with only one type of tree.

  • Money from Nature: Many jobs in Nepal depend on our rich nature, like farming, forestry, and tourism. From plants used for medicine to unique animals that bring visitors, nature helps many Nepalis earn a living. Losing nature hurts these jobs.

  • Our Culture and Spirit: For a long time, nature has been a big part of Nepal's culture and beliefs. Our festivals and daily lives are often connected to nature. So, protecting nature also means keeping our history and way of life safe.

  • New Discoveries: Many of our medicines, foods, and tools come from nature. There's still so much we don't know about the different kinds of life on Earth. This hidden knowledge could help us find new cures, grow more food, and make new tools in the future.

Nature's Trouble: Why Nepal's Nature is Shrinking

Even though nature is so important, it's in danger in Nepal. As someone planting trees in cities, I see these problems clearly in our towns:

  • Losing Homes: Cities are growing fast. New buildings and roads are destroying natural places where plants and animals live. In Kathmandu Valley, green areas are getting smaller, and animals are losing their paths to move around.

  • Pollution: Dirty air, water, and soil, especially in cities like Kathmandu, harm animals and plants. Dirty water from cities pollutes rivers, hurting fish and other water life. Car smoke makes the air bad, hurting people and plants.

  • Climate Change: Nepal is hit hard by climate change. We have strange weather, more floods and droughts, and changing weather patterns. These changes harm natural places, move animals and plants to new areas, and can cause some to disappear forever.

  • New Plants and Animals: Sometimes, plants or animals from other places are brought here, sometimes by accident. These new types can take over, harming the plants and animals that naturally live here.

  • Taking Too Much: Cutting down too many trees, illegal hunting, and taking too much from nature puts a lot of stress on animals and their homes.

These problems are all connected, making it a big challenge that needs quick action.

Our Hope: Urban Plantation and Community Action – Using the Miyawaki Method!

Even with these big problems, there's a lot of hope. At LilysLeaves.org.np, we believe that every person, every community, and every planted seed can help. Our projects to plant trees in Kathmandu and Lalitpur show this. We're especially excited about using a special method called the Miyawaki method.

Here’s how our work, and your help, can make a real difference:

  1. Fast-Growing Forests with Miyawaki: We are actively working to reintroduce native plant species into urban areas. And to do this even better, we're using the Miyawaki method. This is a special way of planting developed by a Japanese scientist, Dr. Akira Miyawaki. It means planting many native trees very close together in a small area. This makes them grow much faster and creates a dense, natural forest in a short time – sometimes 10 times faster than normal! These mini-forests act as natural air purifiers, absorbing pollutants and releasing oxygen. They also help cool down hot city areas, making our concrete jungles more livable. By carefully selecting native species, we ensure that the urban ecosystem benefits maximally.

  2. Creating Urban Homes (Habitats): A strategically planned urban forest isn't just about looking nice; it's about creating small natural homes. Even a small area of native plants, especially a dense Miyawaki forest, can provide food, shelter, and places for urban animals like birds, butterflies, and helpful bugs to live. This helps keep nature working well in the city.

  3. Helping with Water: Trees and green spaces are important for how water moves in cities. They help soak up rain, which means less flooding in the city, a growing problem in Kathmandu. They also help put water back into the ground.

  4. Teaching About Nature: Our projects are not just about planting trees; they're about teaching people. We get local people, schools, and helpers involved in the planting process, including the exciting Miyawaki technique. This helps them understand more about nature and why it's important to protect it. When people help, they become protectors of their local environment.

  5. Making Communities Stronger: Green spaces improve mental and physical well-being, provide places to relax, and help build stronger communities. A greener city is a healthier, happier city, better able to deal with problems.

  6. Choosing Local Plants: A key part of LilysLeaves.org.np's work is to prioritize native tree and plant species in our urban plantations. This is especially true for our Miyawaki forests. Native species are best adapted to the local climate and soil conditions, require less water and care once established, and provide the most appropriate habitat and food sources for local animals. This contrasts with the sometimes harmful practice of planting plants from other places that may not support local nature.

What Can YOU Do to Protect Nature?

The good news is you don't need to be a scientist to help. Every little thing you do helps protect nature.

  • Support Local Groups: Help groups like LilysLeaves.org.np. Come help us plant trees (maybe even in a Miyawaki forest!), give money, or just tell others about our work. Every bit of help makes a difference in transforming Kathmandu and Lalitpur into greener, more natural cities.

  • Plant Local: If you have a garden, balcony, or even just a pot, choose to plant native species. Visit local plant shops and ask for plants that are native to Nepal. They will grow better and help local bugs and animals.
  • Use Less, Reuse, Recycle: Try to use less stuff and throw away less trash. This means we use fewer natural resources and create less pollution, which helps nature.

  • Save Water and Energy: Small changes in your daily life, like taking shorter showers or turning off lights, can add up to make a big difference for the environment.

  • Buy Smart: Support businesses that care about nature and get their stuff in a good way. Look for labels that show they are good for the environment.

  • Be a Good Visitor: When you visit Nepal's beautiful nature, stay on paths, don't bother animals, and don't leave any trash. Support local people who are trying to protect nature.

  • Learn and Teach: Learn more about nature and why it's important. Share what you learn with friends, family, and your community. Knowing is the first step to acting.

  • Speak Up: Support rules and plans that help protect nature and grow things in a good way. Your voice matters.
